My second-hand Renault Zoe ZE40 EV broke down one Sunday evening at the end of July with an electric motor failure. The AA brought me home. Two days later, someone took the car on a low-loader to Alan Thompson Motor Engineers Ltd in Cheadle Hulme. I asked for an assessment of the damage, the cause, and the cost of rectification. A frank chat with the proprietor realistically advised me of the likely extent of the problem.

Given my age and circumstances, we decided that the best course of action would be to sell the car to a salvage company at a slightly higher rate than the scrap value, and to spend the money on a leased EV.

The garage kept the Zoe safe and secure for me and helped me to arrange and negotiate collection. I had to attend in person to provide photo ID to satisfy the conditions set by the government when scrapping a car. It was an unexpected minefield filled with many seemingly trivial pitfalls; but they mattered.

Although I did not use the company to repair my car, since it was uneconomic to do so, I am confident that the work would have been done to a high, professional standard in a friendly manner.
